Abstract
In South Korea, the number of senior citizens who are employed is on the increase. However, the largest percentage of the jobs held by the elderly can be described as ¡°low-quality¡±. This description is based on the following factors: The jobs pay low wages, they are low-skilled jobs and they offer low levels of job security. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of job quality on the life satisfaction of elderly employees. To this end, the quality of jobs was measured by utilizing the concept of informal employment. This study analyzes the data of people aged 55 to 75 collected in the seventh-wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. The results of this study are as follows: First, the elderly in formal employment displayed higher levels of life satisfaction than their peers who were unemployed. Second, senior citizens in informal employment displayed lower levels of life satisfaction than those who were unemployed. This finding indicates that working in a low-quality jobs has a greater adverse effect on life satisfaction than being unemployed. Third, the elderly in formal employment showed higher levels of life satisfaction than those who were in informal employment. The findings of this study therefore indicate that improving the life satisfaction of elderly employees requires the provision of quality jobs, in the form of formal employment. In addition, a quantitative expansion of quality jobs available to the elderly is necessary.
